School Governance

School governing bodies are responsible for the conduct of maintained schools in England.
The School Governance (Constitution) Regulations 2012
These amendments came into force on 17 March 2012

The changes encompass the following:

the eligibility criteria for appointment as a staff governor
the definition of foundation governors
the disqualification criteria for appointment as a partnership governor
removal of the reference to interim executive member in regulation twenty two
update of the definition of appropriate religious body
removal of the disqualification from serving as a governor whilst detained under the Mental Health Act
update of the restrictions from serving as a governor during bankruptcy.

Association aims are to:

  • HELP governors,
  • PROVIDE a means by which governors can use their collective strength,
  • RAISE public awareness, and
  • PROMOTE co-operation between all concerned with education.

Bury Governor Training Group

Training for all governors is to be encouraged. Although not compulsory, it is strongly recommended and all governors, however experienced, need training to improve their effectiveness and to keep abreast of developments that may affect their schools and roles as governors. New governors should take advantage of induction training. It will benefit their schools if governing bodies use the funds they allocate for governor training and development. There is a wide range of training and support available for governors and each governing body should consider what its needs are and how training can help it to meet those needs...
